RESOLUTION FOR PEACE IN RESPONSE TO THE MIDDLE EAST CRISIS

WHEREAS, the County of Humboldt has an important and longstanding history of supporting peace and diplomatic solutions to international conflicts; and

WHEREAS, there has been intolerable innocent death and destruction in the Middle East, before and since October 7, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Humboldt County is a community that rejects violence, hate speech and racism of any kind; and

WHEREAS, Humboldt County is a community that embraces and supports peace, justice and respect for all; and

WHEREAS, there has been far too much division in our community.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County of Humboldt does hereby support:

  •  An immediate mutual and permanent ceasefire and total cessation of violence by all parties involved;

  •   A mutual exchange of all hostages and civilian political prisoners;

  •  Unrestricted delivery of humanitarian assistance, and restoration of food, water, electricity and medical supplies to Gaza;

  •  Mutual respect for international law; and

  •  Reinvigorated diplomacy to develop a permanent, just solution to the conflict and lasting peace in the region.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution is sent to the office of President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Laphonza Butler, Senator Alex Padilla, Representative Jared Huffman, State Senator Mike McGuire, Assembly member Jim Wood, urging them to take immediate action to use their position and influence to end the violence and take significant steps toward peace in the region.
