Multnomah County, Oregon passed a CEASEFIRE resolution on March 7, 2024

BEFORE THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FOR MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OREGON

RESOLUTION NO. 2024-016

Calling for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners finds:

  1. Social justice is a core value of our Board. Leaning into that value, we strive for peaceful conflict resolutions that mitigate the impact of those conflicts on our communities.

  2. All human life is precious, and the targeting of civilians, no matter their faith or ethnicity, is a violation of international humanitarian law.

  3. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at imminent risk if a ceasefire is not achieved and humanitarian aid is not delivered without delay.

  4. The United States, as a long-standing ally and supporter of Israel, has the ability to influence the actions of Israel’s government.

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners resolves:

  1. Keeping with Multnomah County’s values, we call for an immediate ceasefire, return of hostages, safe passage and free access for humanitarian organizations to provide medical aid, food, water, clothing, fuel, power, and shelter to Gazan civilians.

  2. On passage, this resolution will be sent to our U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley; our U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Suzanne Bonamici, Lori Chavez-DeRemer; and President Joe Biden.

ADOPTED this 7th day of March, 2024.
