The City Council of Monterey Park, California passed a CEASEFIRE resolution on April 17, 2024

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF MONTEREY PARK SUPPORTING A PERMANENT BILATERAL CEASEFIRE TO THE CONFLICT AND HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IMPACTING GAZA AND ISRAEL

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Monterey Park as follows:

SECTION 1: The City Council finds as follows:

  1. The City of Monterey Park is a diverse community made up of individuals from all cultures, religions, backgrounds and viewpoints who join together to form a community that is inclusive and welcoming;

  2. The City of Monterey Park commits to advocating for peace, justice, equality, safety and mutual respect for all people, regardless of religion, race or nationality;

  3. The City of Monterey Park believes in peace, unity and the value of all human life;

  4. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at risk without a permanent ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian and medical aid;

  5. International organizations such as the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam, the Carter Center, United Nations Children's Fund, World Food Programme and the International Rescue Committee have made calls for ceasefire and the return of all hostages to prevent further loss of civilian lives;

SECTION 2: The City Council of Monterey Park acknowledges the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians, resulting in loss of life, displacement, and widespread suffering; and recognizes the urgency of addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

SECTION 3: The City Council joins other cities in calling on Congress and the Biden administration to utilize every tool at its disposal to push for a permanent bilateral ceasefire, immediate safe return and release of all hostages, delivery of substantial and sufficient humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza, and a lasting resolution and durable peace that protects the lives, health and security of all innocent civilians.

SECTION 4: The City Council requests that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the City’s federal representatives and other interested parties.

SECTION 5: Severability. If any part of this Resolution or its application is deemed invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, the City Council intends that such invalidity will not affect the effectiveness of the remaining provision or application and, to this end, the provisions of this Resolution are severable.

SECTION 6: Electronic Signatures. This Resolution may be executed with electronic signatures in accordance with Government Code §16.5. Such electronic signatures will be treated in all respects as having the same effect as an original signature.

SECTION 7: Recordation. The Mayor, or presiding officer, is authorized to sign this Resolution signifying its adoption by the City Council of the City of Monterey Park and the City Clerk, or her duly appointed deputy, may attest thereto.

SECTION 8: Effective Date. This Resolution will become effective immediately upon adoption and will remain effective unless repealed or superseded.
