The Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus passed a CEASEFIRE resolution on January 8, 2024:
Resolution for an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
WHEREAS, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in immense civilian casualties, including a disproportionately high number of women and children, causing widespread human suffering and displacement.
WHEREAS, this conflict has further exacerbated existing challenges faced by women and girls in the region, including limited access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
WHEREAS, peace and stability are vital for the fundamental rights, security, and well-being of all individuals, regardless of gender, ethnic background, or nationality.
WHEREAS, numerous national and international organizations, human rights groups, and unions have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further loss of life and to enable the provision of humanitarian aid to those affected.
WHEREAS, the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus strives to promote peace, equality, and justice throughout the state.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus urges all relevant stakeholders, including national governments and international bodies, to take immediate action toward a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza.
1. Calls upon all parties involved in the conflict to cease hostilities immediately, putting an end to the indiscriminate targeting of civilian populations.
2. Urges all stakeholders to facilitate the delivery of essential humanitarian aid, including medical supplies, food, and clean water, to ensure the provision of immediate relief to affected communities in the region.
3. Encourages diplomatic efforts and international mediation to facilitate a negotiated and lasting peace agreement, addressing the root causes and promoting reconciliation.
4. Requests the international community to support and actively engage in initiatives that promote dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect among communities affected.
5. Calls on the US to work with the UN Security Council to prioritize the establishment and deployment of an independent international monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance with the agreed ceasefire and prevent any future violations.
6. Appeals to the Rhode Island state government and our federal delegation to work toward increased diplomatic efforts and resources toward achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.
7. Urges state and local stakeholders, including educational institutions and community organizations, to contribute to educational programs, awareness campaigns, and humanitarian aid initiatives aimed at supporting the affected population in the region.
8. The Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus is committed to monitoring the situation in the region as well as in other areas of the world where women and children disproportionately carry the burden of war and are further victimized by the violence of patriarchy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus shall transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor of Rhode Island, members of the Rhode Island Congressional delegation, and other relevant state and federal officials to express our commitment to peace and justice in Gaza and the region, and to seek their support in advancing this cause.
