The City Council of New Britain, Connecticut passed a CEASEFIRE resolution on August 14, 2024:

RE: Ceasefire Resolution Regarding Palestine and Israel

To Her Honor, the Mayor, and the Common Council of the City of New Britain: the undersigned beg leave to recommend the adoption of the following:

WHEREAS, the city of New Britain is a city of all people, whose history and present is informed by the struggles of those from all around the world; and

WHEREAS, cases of antisemitism and islamophobia are becoming more frequent in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the term “apartheid” was used by President Carter to describe the relationship between the state of Israel and Palestinian people; and

WHEREAS, South Africa, a former apartheid state, has brought charges against Israel for the act of genocide; and

WHEREAS, the Israel-Hamas conflict, as of August 7th 2024, has claimed the lives of over 39,000 Palestinians, about half of whom are children, over 1,400 Israelis, several Americans, humanitarian aid workers, and thousands of others; and

WHEREAS, millions of civilian lives are in imminent risk of famine during the absence of protected humanitarian aid and a ceasefire; and

WHEREAS, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, as of August 7th, 2024 this conflict has been deadlier for journalists than any other war, accounting for 113 deaths; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations’ International Court of Justice has sought arrest warrants for both Hamas and Israeli leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the New Britain Common Council reaffirms our commitment to standing in solidarity with our residents of the Jewish and Muslim faith by condemning collective punishment, antisemitism, islamophobia, terrorism in all forms, and apartheid; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New Britain Common Council urges foreign and domestic leaders to reach a humane and peaceful end to the conflict between Palestine and Israel, closer embracing the right of all people to live freely; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New Britain Common Council pleas for the release of all hostages and detainees under an immediate and permanent ceasefire; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New Britain Common Council recognizes the significance of global perspectives regarding all people living under violence and oppression; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the New Britain Common Council calls upon our federal delegates and the President of the United States to halt any military funding and weapons shipments towards this conflict and instead redirect those funds to domestic housing projects, public education, healthcare, and the assistance of rebuilding Palestinian infrastructure.
