TOWN OF TAOS RESOLUTION 23-50
A RESOLUTION OF THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE TOWN OF TAOS CALLING FOR AN IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE AND CALLING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL SOLUTION FOR PEACE
WHEREAS, all life is precious, and the targeting of civilians, no matter their faith or ethnicity is a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948; and
WHEREAS, the United States took a lead role in the committee established to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and
WHEREAS, the United States employed its immense diplomatic power to coalesce support for the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and was one of the original 48 countries voting to adopt the document; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Special Commission on Palestine recommended a two-state solution in 1947 to create the modern state of Israel; and
WHEREAS, the United States is one of five permanent members on the United Nations Security Council with veto powers, and on October 18, 2023, vetoed a UN Security Council Resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Government of the United States continues to hold immense influence, including the diplomatic power to save Israeli and Palestinian lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE TOWN OF TAOS:
calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian and Israeli conflict; and
calls for the unfettered movement of humanitarian aid and relief workers into Gaza; and
advocates for an international solution to find a long-term peaceful outcome; and
urges the Congress of the United States to pass House Resolution 786; and
urges the Biden Administration to stop the use of veto powers when resolutions calling for a ceasefire are brought before the United Nations Security Council.
